Crater is a brand consultancy based in Madrid that works with industrial companies in Bilbao and the Basque Country. Audit, strategy, positioning and visual and verbal identity. For SMEs with a solid product whose brand is not up to the standard of what they actually do.
Bilbao has world-class industry. Most of its brands, do not.
The Basque Country accounts for 6.2% of Spain's industrial GDP with less than 5% of the population, being one of the regions with the highest density of high value-added manufacturing companies (Eustat, Economic Accounts of the Basque Country 2023). Machinery manufacturers, energy suppliers, engineering firms with four decades of history. Cooperatives within the Mondragón orbit that export to European markets. BIC Bizkaia has supported more than 3,000 business projects focusing on innovation and competitiveness of Basque SMEs. BBK leads investment in the local business landscape.
That industrial muscle is real. The problem is that it is not always visible from the outside.
Many of these companies compete in German trade fairs or European tenders with websites from 2014, without a clear narrative of why they are different, and with a visual identity that hasn't changed since someone's nephew designed it. The product holds up to comparison. The brand does not. And that has direct consequences: a price you cannot defend, markets you cannot access, clients who rule you out before even speaking to you.
The problem is not aesthetic. It is economic.
What we do when an industrial company from Bilbao calls us
We work from Madrid. That is not an inconvenience, it is the model. Most of the strategic work —audit, competitive analysis, definition of positioning— is done remotely with structured sessions. We travel to the Basque Country when the project requires it: internal workshops, validation with sales teams, presentations to management.
The process always starts with an uncomfortable diagnosis: how the company is currently perceived versus how it should be perceived. This involves reviewing direct and indirect competition, interviewing real clients, and mapping the points where the brand is losing value. Then we build the differential positioning and the visual and verbal universe to support it: one that works on the website, at a trade fair in Hannover, and in the dossier sent by the sales team.
We do not promise transformation. We promise a brand system that holds up: consistent, scalable, and aligned with who the company really is.
Frequently asked questions from industrial companies in the Basque Country
Can we work with a consultancy that is not in Bilbao?
Yes. Brand strategy does not need physical proximity; it needs good information and solid judgment. We structure the project with remote and face-to-face phases depending on what the work requires. We have clients throughout the territory. Geography has not been an issue in any project.
How long does a brand project take?
Between 8 and 20 weeks depending on the scope. A complete rebranding —diagnosis, strategy, visual and verbal universe, applications— borders on the upper limit. A more limited intervention, on the lower. No endless projects or phases that drag on without clear deliverables.
Do you understand the industrial sector?
We have worked with manufacturing, engineering, and distribution companies. Industries change. The challenge of communicating value without depending solely on price does not change. What we do is quickly understand the specific business and build from there, not from generic industrial branding templates.
What happens if the internal committee cannot agree?
This happens frequently in family businesses and cooperatives with multiple decision-making levels. Part of our job is to facilitate that consensus with strategic criteria. We do not just deliver files: we accompany the process so that brand decisions have real internal backing.
The company that repositions first in its sector captures the space. The others arrive late.
In industrial sectors where several competitors have equivalent products, the brand defines who leads the conversation with the customer. Every month spent with a brand that does not represent what you do is ground ceded to those who do have it clear.
Tell us where you are and what you want to change. First conversation at no cost or commitment.
